A short comic inspired by the book Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky.  It's a great read full of amazing examples of how salt has shaped history and culture, the whale recipes being just a small example within the larger context of medieval economies.

As someone who's been obsessed with whales from a very young age, I'm strongly against hunting them for any reason, (I was that kid with the 'Save The Whales' t-shirt in first grade).  However, I'm completely fascinated by the long and notorious history of whales as food source and economic commodity.

Along with the Kurlansky book, other sources include:

The Whale As Food: by Octopus Gourmet

12 Items at the Feast of Henry VIII

Saving the Whale (and Eating Them Too?)

The Wikipedia entry for Whale Meat is also pretty interesting (and sad).
